Chapter 17
December, 1925
“THIS year has flown by,” Jack said, as he and Wyatt dressed for their Christmas party.
“Indeed it has, but look at how it’s gone. I’d have to say, it’s the most momentous year of my life. What about you?”
Jack chuckled when Wyatt gave him a provocative wink. “The happiest, at least.”
“For everyone it would seem. It’s been what, six months since you introduced Eric to Matthew, and they’re still together? Will miracles never cease? How nice it was that both Eric and Matthew took you up on your invitation to Marlowe’s.”
“Yes, that was quite nice. I knew when I met Matthew at my lawyer’s office that he’d be perfect for Eric. He has his softer side, but he’s not about to let Eric use him. He’s not demanding, and he needs nothing but Eric. What a refreshing change from all the hustlers.”
“You showed Eric there was more to life, and he’s a new man because of it.”
Jack huffed at his uncooperative tie. “More like the guy I met.”
“Here, let me tie that for you. You are hopeless when it comes to these things.”
“That’s why I keep you around, my dear.” He leaned in and kissed Wyatt. “I love you, you know.”
Wyatt smiled. “So you keep telling me.”
Jack wrapped his arms around Wyatt. “Do you mind?”
“That you love me or that you keep telling me?”
“Either or.”
“Not at all. I believe it’s a requirement of my existence.”
They held each other fast for several moments. Jack’s security rested within the man he held in his arms. “As much as I hate to let you go, we’d better get downstairs.”
Wyatt stepped out of the embrace. “I suppose so, but we do have later on.”
“Count on it,” Jack said as he patted Wyatt’s behind, taking perverse pleasure in the man’s sharp hiss.
Their guests crowded the foyer when they reached the bottom stair.
“You’ve outdone me this year,” Eric said when he walked through the door with Matthew in tow. “Beautifully decorated.”
Jack gave Eric a mock bow. “Thank you, sir. Merry Christmas to you both.”
“Merry Christmas,” Matthew said. “It’s nice to see you again.”
Eric laughed. “I think Jack and Wyatt are happy to see us together after all these months. I never thought it would happen, but it has, and I have you to thank.”
Eric hugged Jack and whispered, “Thank you.”
“We’ll talk again, but we have to greet our other guests,” Jack said as he clapped Eric on the back.
“Come, darling, let’s mingle.” Eric took Matthew’s arm, and they walked away. The sight warmed Jack’s heart.
“He’s changed for the better,” Wyatt said.
As guests trickled in instead of coming in waves, Jack and Wyatt joined the party. Their eclectic group included many people from Starlight, but also others from among the friendly press and even Jack’s old friend, Tommy, from the boarding house.
“I really should get him on at the studio,” Jack whispered to Wyatt.
“After all these years, I suspect he is as successful as he wishes to be.”
“Maybe so. He never did mention any aspirations to act.
